THIRD SPACE ENDOSCOPY—LATEST IN GASTROENTEROLOGY

Gastrointestinal endoscopy if the process of visualizing inner pat of intestine and treating the diseases by different techniques.

What I am discussing today is third space endoscopy. Third space endoscopy is latest innovation in GI medicines and a variety of techniques have brought therapeutic endoscopy at a different level. It has resulted in treatment of such diseases with minimum invasion which was noy possible in past.

Third space endoscopy is when we introduce our endoscope into the layer of intestine and do procedures for treatment of disease. This is in contrast to our day today routine endoscopy where we introduce our scope in lumen of intestine.

Primarily it has helped in treatment of disease like nodules and small cancers (known as ESD—Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection) in the initial phase which can be resected immediately.

Also, patients with achalasia undergo myotomy endoscopically (known as POEM—Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) and result in tremendous benefit. In coming few years, third space endoscopy is determined to become standard of care of more and more diseases
